Tractor-Trailer and School Bus Collide in Appling County

On Monday, five people, including three children, were injured in a crash involving a tractor-trailer and an Appling County school bus. According to the Georgia State Patrol, the crash occurred on Georgia Hwy-121 near the intersection of DM Tillman Road.

Police said the school bus pulled out from an intersection in front of the semi, which crashed into the driver’s side of the bus, shoving it into a ditch. Three children were on the bus at the time of the crash. The students and both drivers were treated and released for minor injuries at Appling County Hospital.

No charges have been filed and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Before crossing over a road or entering any intersection, it is critical to look in both directions for oncoming traffic, even if you have the right of way. Taking a moment to look for oncoming traffic can mean the difference between a safe trip and a devastating one, which is especially true when tractor-trailers are involved.

Tractor-trailers cannot stop as quickly as smaller vehicles and carry tremendous momentum and force due to their size and weight. A collision with a tractor-trailer often results in catastrophic injuries or fatalities, particularly when the point of impact occurs on the broad side of the other vehicle. Carefully looking in both directions is a simple habit that can prevent life-altering injuries and save lives.
